The tonality of space evades beyond the neutral in Sparsity Black, a group show highlighting the works of Elisabeth Kley and B. Thom Stevenson. A play on the systematic Varsity Blues’ coming of age themes that only continue with age, Sparsity Black is riddled with ozymandias melancholia and how we engage with the uselessness of life. All that we work towards and embed meaning with, leaves us with nothing but the endeavor to fill the gaps between man and existence. Each piece of work veers on parody’s mode of discourse, representing both the dark critical sentiment and the light blank space of ambiguous sympathy. And from the coal that turns from black to ash, you cannot solder an abyss with air.
